Adam Dia

Computer Engineering student at the University of Ottawa, working on embedded systems and hardware design.

I design PCBs, write firmware and build the tools around them, from field-deployed data loggers to the gadgets on my desk.

Projects

Porch Light Controller

2026

ESP32 · custom PCB

A self-correcting porch light that follows real sunrise and sunset times. An ESP32 on a custom PCB runs the schedule, with a local web interface and over-the-air updates.

Mixy

2026

RP2040 audio mixer

A USB dial that balances game and voice-chat audio on Linux, inspired by the SteelSeries ChatMix knob. I designed the 3D-printed case, wrote the RP2040 firmware, and built a Python service that drives PipeWire in real time.

Yarvis

2022 – now

Augmented reality workstation

A touchless AR workstation. A Kinect V2 depth sensor and Google MediaPipe track hand landmarks, a C++ backend handles the sensor, and a Python/OpenCV pipeline renders the interface, all on an Intel N100 mini PC.

IEEE uOttawa

2025 – now

Technical Coordinator

I run hands-on workshops for the student branch, from Intro to PCB Design with KiCad to Microchips & Dips, a bare-metal intro to embedded C through direct register manipulation. 75+ students so far, plus plenty of help debugging projects and getting comfortable with scopes and bench supplies.

Apidae Systems

2025 – 2026

Founding Hardware Engineer

Designed ESP32-based agricultural data loggers with RS-485/Modbus sensor interfaces and took them through 20+ PCB revisions into automated SMT production. Also built an off-grid solar logging station rated to −40 °C for an Arctic research deployment.

FPGA UART Transmitter

2025

VHDL · Altera FPGA

A UART transmitter written in VHDL as a finite state machine and deployed to an Altera FPGA with Quartus II. I prototyped an RS-232 transceiver and verified framing, start/stop bits and baud rate on the scope. That's an ASCII M on screen.

Kelpie Robotics

2023 – 2025

Electrical Lead

Led 15 students designing the electronics for an underwater ROV: a 1500 W power distribution board, a Raspberry Pi sensor HAT with leak detection, and a low-latency UART-to-TCP bridge in C between an STM32 and the Pi for thruster control and telemetry. I also built a photogrammetry pipeline for autonomous coral reef mapping.

Arduino Rubber Ducky

2023

Arduino Micro

A DIY, low-cost alternative to the USB Rubber Ducky, built on an Arduino Micro.

EMG Prosthetic Arm

2020

InMoov · EMG

An 18650-powered prosthetic arm prototype based on the open-source InMoov design. An EMG sensor reads muscle signals to drive a single servo that closes all five fingers together.
